ONLINE ONLY - 1) Tangible digitization: Turning a digital museum object into an accessible experience 2) Towards different “ways of seeing” cultural heritage through inclusive practices
This session can only be accessed online. As someone with an on-site ticket you can access this session using your own device and headset. Room A is available to use to join online sessions.
This session has two different interventions, followed by a Q&A.
In the first intervention Tina Schneider, media scholar at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, shares how the museum is turning a digital museum object, a 3D model of a digitised dor beetle specimen from the museum’s insect collection, into an accessible experience. Join and find out about this innovative reuse scenario that addresses the themes of accessibility, storytelling, and collaboration.
The second intervention, led by Chiara Bartolini, Postdoc Researcher at the University of Bologna, focuses on museum audio description (AD) as a form of visual interpretation and as an example of museum translation. Participants will learn about its potential for non-sighted and sighted alike, and hear how museum translation may become a tool – rather than an end in itself – to raise awareness about accessibility issues, offer wider, shared access to cultural heritage, reinterpret practices and discourses around our heritage and ultimately rethink the ways in which museums and their communities could become more equal and inclusive.
Tina Schneider is media scholar in the science programme "Collection Future" at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, Germany, where she coordinates projects with SMEs and other stakeholders. As scientific co-lead of “Mediasphere For Nature”, the museum’s application lab for digital media, Tina supports the re-use of (scientific) digital media, e.g. for product developments or hackathons. Previously, she worked several years in New Zealand’s film & television industry and has further experience in the museum context through project work at the Institute for Visual Media (now Hertz Lab) at ZKM - Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe.
