ONLINE ONLY - Environmental sustainability of Digital Preservation of Cultural Heritage: is Eco-sufficiency answering the pressing question?

The intensifying effects of climate change are becoming one of the main threats to cultural heritage, posing risks of degradation or destruction, and among risk mitigation measures, digitalisation is regarded as a promising tool. However, the ICT infrastructure required for the digitalisation process exerts significant pressures on the environment.
In this session you will hear about a sustainability framework developed for the preservation of cultural heritage through digitalisation, aiming to minimise environmental impact and maximise the potential of preservation. Join to hear more about the framework, hear results from testing of the framework with the Finnish Heritage Agency, and learn how extensive stakeholder networks are advancing the sustainability of digital preservation.
Evangelia Paschalidou (LLB, LLM, MSc) is a recent graduate of the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (Lund, Sweden). Her research focuses on the environmental sustainability of the ICT infrastructure used in the digital preservation of cultural heritage. She is active with the international team of Museums for Future, while pursuing to continue her academic research. Communication and openness are of her favorite themes.

About me
Fiona is a Data Analyst in Programme and Business Development at Europeana, and currently works on ENUMERATE, and business analytics. She joined Europeana in 2018 to work in data aggregation after several years working across the cultural sector. Fiona has a special interest in 3D content, thanks to her background in Archaeology. She has a PhD in Classics from the University of Edinburgh which focused on Roman funerary archaeology, art and epigraphy. Fiona also worked in archaeological finds cataloguing and ancient glass studies, and was part of an international team who excavated the Dariali Fort in Georgia from 2013-2016.

Dr Seamus Ross has since 2009 been Professor in the Faculty of Information UofToronto and served as its Dean from 2009 through 2015. In 2016 and 2017 he was Visiting Professor at Athens Uni of Economics and Business From 1997 to 2009 he was Professor of Humanities Informatics and Digital Curation and Founding Director of HATII (Humanities Advanced Technology & Information Institute) at the University of Glasgow. He was also Associate Director of the UK's Digital Curation Centre (DCC), 2004-2009.
