Collaborative Preservation of Cultural Heritage: Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online (SUCHO)
Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online (SUCHO) is a global collective of more than 1,300 volunteers, working together to rescue Ukrainian digital cultural heritage. Using a combination of web archiving technologies, SUCHO has so far archived over 50 TB of cultural heritage data from more than 4,500 websites. The members of the collective are currently engaged in organising aid shipments of digitisation equipment to Ukraine, setting up an online gallery for Ukrainian cultural heritage, and collecting Ukrainian war-memes. These efforts were made possible by remotely pooling the expertise, resources and motivation of strangers.
How do you ensure that volunteers with different levels of digital literacy can equally participate in a shared community effort? What kind of technical infrastructure is needed to support so many collaborators working collectively with large amounts of data? And what lessons can we learn from SUCHO to avoid having to organise similar data rescue efforts in the future? These are the questions that will be tackled in this talk.

Sebastian Majstorovic is a Digital Historian and IT Consultant. He currently works at the Austrian Centre for Digital Humanities and Cultural Heritage of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, where he internal projects and external cooperations on their technology stacks. His digital fields of expertise are geovisualisations, JAMStack web applications, SaaS & Cloud DevOps, and the application of AI computer vision to historical sources. Sebastian is also a PhD candidate in 19th century political and migration history at the European University Institute.

My interest in history has been fueled since I got more in touch with heritage. Cultural institutions have a wealth of information stored in archives. Their valuable collections are patiently waiting to be viewed. I am thrilled to contribute to making this available to the world.
I am involved with digitization, collections management systems, crowdsourcing and making collections accessible to the (global) public. Personally I have interest in the latest developments in regards to collections management; specifically Linked (Open) Data, IIIF, SPARQL and new registration standards like Records In Context.
I'm attending Europeana 2022 to meet like-minded people who want to leverage the latest technologies in collections management. I'd be happy to share thoughts on developments in regards to linking collections, data and sources.
